SmartSleep research
For humans, sleep is a nightly process of biological restitution, and an ongoing disruption of this process may severely affect a person's overall health. Smartphones are easy to bring into bed and offer multiple functions that may disrupt a person's sleep. Therefore, the rapidly growing use of smartphones throughout the day and night has raised public concern.
The aim of the SmartSleep project is to investigate how night-time smartphone use affects and disturbs our sleep. Furthermore, the project's researchers plan to document the long-term health effects of sleep that has been regularly interrupted by smartphone use.
To obtain deeper insights into Danes’ smartphone-related behaviour, sleep, and health, we are using an innovative combination of high-resolution sensor-driven smartphone data, comprehensive clinical and biological measures, questionnaire data, and health information from Danish population registers. This data is being analysed in three studies, as shown in the figure below.
