SmartSleep Population
SmartSleep Population is investigating how night-time smartphone use affects sleep and health.
We developed an app that automatically tracks screen activations and accelerometer data around-the-clock. The app provides direct feedback to each participant on their personal night-time smartphone use and sleep patterns. Such mapping is a unique opportunity for the research team to utilise high-resolution objective information on smartphone activity and to document sleep interrupted by smartphone use during the entire sleep period.
In addition to smartphone-tracking data, we have also collected information on participants' lifestyles, health behaviour, and health via an online questionnaire and Danish population registers.
In 2020, approximately 6,500 adults participated in SmartSleep Population, where these participants tracked their sleep and smartphone use for 14 nights via the SmartSleep app and then answered a comprehensive questionnaire. Of these, approximately 2,000 participants were contacted by SmartSleep Citizen Science to complete a follow-up questionnaire.
